Edgewater Man Arrested for Sex Offenses

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, June 12, 2013

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police - Family Crimes Division have arrested an Edgewater man for several sex offenses that occurred at A. Mario Loiederman Middle School in Silver Spring.

On May 17, detectives from the Family Crimes Division received information from an administrator at A. Mario Loiederman Middle School that two students at the school had been inappropriately touched by their teacher.  The teacher was identified as Benjamin Robert Cano, age 33, of the 200 block of Night Haven Court in Edgewater, Maryland.

Between May 20 and May 23, detectives met with the two 11-year-old female victims who stated that they had been inappropriately touched by Cano.  The two females also disclosed that a third student, a 12-year-old female, had also been inappropriately touched by Cano.

Further investigation revealed that between August 2012 and May 2013, Cano had touched all three victims inappropriately at the school during school hours.

Based on the above information, an arrest warrant was obtained for Cano.  This morning, Cano was arrested on the strength of the warrant and charged with 3 counts of sexual abuse of a minor and 3 counts of committing a 3rd degree sex offense.  Bond information is unavailable at this time.

Detectives believe that there may be additional students that may have been victims of inappropriate touching by Cano.  Parents are urged to speak with their children who may have been in the presence of Cano and to contact police should any inappropriate conduct be disclosed by their children.  Detectives can be reached at 240-773-5400.
