Officer-Involved Shooting in Gaithersburg

Detectives from the Major Crimes Division-Homicide/Sex Section continue to investigate an officer-involved shooting of a suspect that occurred late last night in Gaithersburg.

Last evening at approximately 10:08 p.m., the Emergency Communications Center received a call from the Howard County Police Department advising that a male suspect involved in a domestic incident in that county may be at a particular address on Quince Orchard Road (in Montgomery County).  The Howard County Police Department advised that during the domestic incident the suspect may have had a firearm and that the suspect was possibly driving a Ford Explorer.

Montgomery County police officers responded to the residence in the 14000 block of Quince Orchard Road in Gaithersburg and observed a male enter a Ford Explorer and leave the residence.  At approximately 11:29 p.m., officers initiated a traffic stop on that vehicle at the intersection of Quince Orchard Road and Darnestown Road.  As officers approached the Explorer, they observed a shotgun in the vehicle.  During the traffic stop exchange between officers and the suspect, an officer fired his handgun at the suspect. The suspect was struck in the arm and leg but continued to flee in his vehicle on Quince Orchard Road.  Officers pursued the suspect and at the intersection of Quince Orchard Road and Great Seneca Highway, the Ford Explorer struck a vehicle that was stopped at a red light on Great Seneca Highway.  The suspect was then taken into custody.  A shotgun was recovered from the Explorer.



The adult male was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  The adult female driver of the vehicle involved in the collision was unharmed.  No officers were hurt during the incident.

The number of shots fired and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.  The suspect’s identity and charges will be released at a later time.

As is standard procedure, the involved officer, a 19-year veteran of the department, has been placed on paid, administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation.
