Detectives Investigate Drowning at Community Pool

Detectives from the Major Crimes Division - Homicide and Sex Section are investigating a drowning that occurred at a community pool in the New Mark Commons area of Rockville.  Officers from the 1st District and Rockville Police along with Fire Rescue units were called to the pool in the 600 block of Tegner Way at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Saturday night.  Arriving officers located the victim and initiated CPR prior to the arrival of Fire Rescue.  The victim was subsequently transported by Fire Rescue to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital where additional life-saving efforts were unsuccessful and he was pronounced deceased.

The investigation revealed that a group of juveniles entered the pool after closing.  At one point, the victim failed to resurface.  Individuals in the group called out to a person walking nearby who then called 911.

The victim is identified as Hafis Kareem, age 15, of the 700 block of Monroe Street in Rockville.
