Police Investigate Fatal Collision in Gaithersburg

For Immediate Release: Thursday, July 4, 2013

Detectives from the Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal collision that occurred early this morning in Gaithersburg.

At approximately 1:30 a.m., a 6th District patrol officer on N. Summit Avenue observed an SUV approaching with its high-beam headlights on.  The vehicle failed to dim its headlights and the officer made a U-turn to stop the vehicle.  As the officer made the U-turn, he observed the SUV accelerate and turn eastbound on E. Diamond Avenue, while traveling through a red light.  The officer lost sight of the vehicle and when the vehicle could not be located, the officer made a U-turn at Girard Street to begin checking the businesses and driveways along E. Diamond Avenue.  It was at that point that the officer discovered that the SUV had left the roadway.

The preliminary investigation shows that the SUV left the north side of E. Diamond Avenue, struck a utility pole, a bus stop, a tree, a fire hydrant, and a pole support cable.  The vehicle then overturned and came to rest across from 503 E. Diamond Avenue.  The two occupants of the vehicle were ejected.

An adult male was pronounced deceased on the scene.  An adult female was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Their identities are not being released at this time.

The circumstances surrounding this collision remain under investigation.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.  Callers may remain anonymous.
