Police Investigate Drowning at Great Falls

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division – Homicide/Sex Section are investigating a drowning that occurred yesterday afternoon at Great Falls on the Potomac River.





Yesterday, at approximately 4:17 p.m., Montgomery County Fire/Rescue received a call for a drowning of a 23-year-old female in the Potomac River at Great Falls.  Following an extensive search by Fire/Rescue and the victim's fellow kayakers, the victim's body was recovered from the river by Fire/Rescue personnel.

Montgomery County Police detectives are leading the investigation into the victim’s death.  Investigation revealed that the victim was attempting to kayak down the falls.  The victim disappeared while going down the falls and was pinned underneath the water for a period of time.  The victim was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The victim has been identified as Shannon Christy, age 23, of Greenville, South Carolina.
