UPDATE: Suspect Charged in Officer-Involved Shooting

For Immediate Release: Thursday, August 1, 2013

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police - 1st District Investigative Section have charged Juan L. Cazares-Roque, age 26, of an unconfirmed address, with his involvement in the officer-involved shooting that occurred in Gaithersburg on June 23.

On June 23 at approximately 10:08 p.m., the Emergency Communications Center received a call from the Howard County Police Department asking for assistance.  The Howard County Police Department advised that earlier that evening in that county, a male suspect was involved in a domestic incident and during that incident had fired a gun.  Information received by Howard County Police indicated that the suspect, later identifed as Cazares-Roque, may be at a residence in the 14200 block of Quince Orchard Road in Gaithersburg and may be driving a Ford Explorer.

Montgomery County police officers were dispatched and responded to the residence in the 14000 block of Quince Orchard Road in Gaithersburg and observed Cazares-Roque enter a Ford Explorer and leave the residence.  At approximately 11:29 p.m., officers initiated a traffic stop on that vehicle at the intersection of Quince Orchard Road and Darnestown Road.  As officers approached the Explorer, Officer Delacruz observed the driver, Cazares-Roque, reach for a shotgun in the front passenger area of the vehicle.  Officer David Delacruz fired one shot from his rifle.  The suspect was struck in the arm and leg but continued to flee in his vehicle on Quince Orchard Road.  Officers pursued Cazares-Roque in their patrol vehicles and at the intersection of Quince Orchard Road and Great Seneca Highway, the Ford Explorer struck a vehicle that was stopped at a red light on Great Seneca Highway.  Cazares-Roque was then taken into custody.  A shotgun was recovered from the Explorer.  Further investigation revealed that the shotgun recovered from Cazares-Roque's vehicle had been reported stolen from Baltimore County.

Cazares-Roque was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  The adult female driver of the vehicle involved in the collision was unharmed.  No officers were hurt during the incident.

On June 25, upon release from the hospital, Cazares-Roque was transported to the Central Processing Unit and charged with: first degree assault, second degree assault, theft $1,000 to under $10,000, theft: less $1,000 value, and possession of an exposed shotgun in a motor vehicle, ready for use.  Cazares-Roque remains in the custody of Corrections awaiting an August 16 court date.
