Silver Spring Carjacking and Arrest

On Monday, August 5, 4th District officers arrested a suspect responsible for a carjacking that had occurred earlier that day in the 2nd District.  Jamall H. Thorton, age 18, of the 3300 block of Hewitt Avenue in Silver Spring, was arrested and charged with carjacking, conspiracy to commit carjacking, robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, motor vehicle theft, conspiracy to commit motor vehicle theft, unauthorized removal of property, second degree assault, obstruction and hindrance of a police officer, and associated theft charges.

At approximately 3:14 p.m. on Monday, officers from the 2nd District responded to the report of a carjacking that had just occurred in a parking garage in the 8500 block of 16th  Street in Silver Spring.  The 84-year-old victim was opening his black, Lincoln Town Car when two suspects approached him and demanded his keys.  One of the suspects grabbed the victim and pinned him against the vehicle while the other suspect grabbed the keys out of the victim's hands.  The two suspects then entered the vehicle and exited the garage onto 16th Street.  A lookout for the vehicle and suspects was broadcast to Montgomery County Police officers and surrounding jurisdictions, and the stolen vehicle was entered into a national police database.

At approximately 9:45 p.m. that evening, a 4th District plain-clothes officer observed a black, Lincoln Town car in the area of Bel Pre Road in Aspen Hill.  When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled from the vehicle.  The driver, later identified as Thorton, was the sole occupant of the vehicle.  Officers circulated the area for Thorton and at midnight, he was arrested after a brief foot pursuit in the area of Connecticut Avenue and Georgia Avenue.  Thorton was transported to the Central Processing Unit.

The second suspect involved in the carjacking has not been identified.  He is described as a light-complected black male, age 20 to 25, approximately 5'9" tall, and having a slim build.  Anyone with information about the second suspect is asked to call the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070.  Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477) or leave a Crime Solvers tip here.  Crime Solvers will pay a cash reward of up to $10,000 for information provided to them that leads to an arrest and/or indictment for this crime.
