Detectives Investigate Accidental Death in Bethesda

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police - Major Crimes Division are investigating an accidental death that occurred this morning in Bethesda.

This morning, at approximately 8:35 a.m., 2nd District officers and Fire/Rescue personnel responded to a residence in 5700 block of Bent Branch Road for a report of a construction accident.  Investigation revealed that a construction crew had been working outside of a residence when one of the construction workers was accidentally pinned between an excavator and the house.

Other construction workers at the residence were able to free the pinned worker; however, two additional workers were injured in the process.

All three of the victims were transported to Suburban Hospital.  The worker that had been pinned succumbed to his injuries; the other two workers suffered from non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim is identified as John Joseph Whitney, age 42, of the 10300 block of Hickory Ridge Road in Columbia.

The Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Department was notified and is assisting in the ongoing investigation.
