Child Struck by Vehicle in Driveway

For Immediate Release: Monday, October 21, 2013

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police-Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a collision involving a child who was struck by a vehicle in her driveway.

Last night, at approximately 9:15 p.m., Wenhua Song, age 41, of the 9900 block of Potomac Manors Drive in Potomac, left her residence to go to the grocery store.  Her 7-year-old and 16-year-old daughters planned to stay at the residence.

At approximately 9:36 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the same block of Potomac Manors Drive for an alarm call.  When officers responded to that address, a person arriving to that home alerted police that he had just observed a person lying in the Song driveway and had called 911.

Officers responded to the Song residence and located Song and the unresponsive child.  Song had just returned home after realizing she had forgotten something.

The child is identified as 7-year-old Xitong Kong.  She was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition.

Detectives believe that it is possible that Xitong Kong decided she wanted to go with her mother, Wenhua Song, to the grocery store.  As Song left the driveway to go to the store, Kong was struck by her mother's vehicle, a 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL450.

It should be noted that the alarm call at the neighbor's residence is believed to be unrelated to the collision.

The circumstances of this collision remain under investigation.  Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.  Callers may remain anonymous.
