Detectives from the Montgomery County Police 5th District Investigative Section, the Major Crimes Division, and the Internal Affairs Division are investigating an incident in Damascus where a 34-year-old man assaulted an officer with a long gun.

Today at 5:19 p.m., 5th District patrol officers were dispatched to a residence in the 24100 block of Newbury Road after a woman called 911 to report that her daughter's boyfriend had become violent and was damaging the house.  The caller and her daughter were able to leave the house prior to police arrival.

When the first officer arrived, he observed a suspect armed with a long gun exiting the front door.  The suspect pointed the weapon at the officer and the officer then discharged his handgun.  Following that, the suspect put the gun down, additional units arrived, and he was taken into custody without further incident.  The suspect was not injured.

The suspect’s identity and charges will be released at a later time.

As is standard procedure, the involved officer, a 9-year veteran of the department, has been placed on paid, administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070.
