Suspect Arrested for Attempted Rape of Store Employee

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police-Major Crimes Division have arrested Yera Basnueva, age 31, of the 12000 block of Valleywood Drive in Silver Spring, for the attempted rape of a store employee.

Yesterday morning at approximately 9:23, Basnueva entered the Mr. Smoothie store located at 33 Maryland Avenue in Rockville.  He began a conversation with the store employee and introduced himself as "Yera." After approximately thirty minutes, Basnueva asked to use the bathroom.  When he exited the restroom, his pants were down.  Basnueva grabbed the victim and pushed her onto the store counter.  He then attempted to sexually assault the victim and punched her in the face.  The victim punched and kicked Basnueva and he fled from the store.  The event was captured on store surveillance.

Detectives developed Basnueva as a suspect and arrested him last night in the area of his residence.  He was transported to the Central Processing Unit and charged with attempted first degree rape and second degree assault.  He is being held without bond.
