During the months of October and November 2013, multiple jurisdictions in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, including Montgomery County, have experienced a series of pickpocket thefts and thefts by distraction that have occurred at grocery stores. The suspect in these incidents was identified by Montgomery County Police 4th District detectives as Desha Wilkins, age 42, of 2500 Kirkland Avenue in District Heights, Maryland.  Detectives believe that Wilkins may be responsible for approximately 20 pickpocket and fraud incidents in the area.

On November 21, Montgomery County Police served a search warrant at Wilkins' residence in District Heights.  Wilkins was not at home when the search warrant was served, however evidence linking Wilkins to the crimes was recovered.
