Father Charged with First Degree Murder in Death of 3-Year-Old Son

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, February 18, 2014

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police-Major Crimes Division have charged Brian Patrick O’ Callaghan, age 36, of the 25200 block of Conrad Court in Damascus, with first degree murder and child abuse resulting in death.  The victim, Hyunsu O'Callaghan, is Brian O’ Callaghan’s adopted three-year-old son.

On February 2, detectives from the Montgomery County Police-Major Crimes Division were notified that the victim, Hyunsu O’ Callaghan, was at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.; he was unresponsive and had multiple injuries.  Detectives responded to the hospital and spoke with medical personnel.  Investigators learned that the victim’s injuries, to include trauma to the brain, indicated that the victim was recently beaten.  The victim’s father had not provided an explanation of the child’s injuries to doctors.

Hyunsu died of his injuries on February 3.  The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in the District of Columbia performed an autopsy and determined that the manner of death was homicide by multiple blunt impact injuries.

During the investigation, detectives interviewed Brian O’ Callaghan.  He stated that he had complete care and custody of Hyunsu from January 31 through February 1.  On February 1, he had driven Hyunsu, who was unresponsive, to the Shady Grove Adventist Emergency Center at Germantown.  (The child was then transported to the Children’s National Medical Center).

On Sunday, February 16, Brian O’ Callaghan was arrested and charged with first degree murder and child abuse resulting in death.  O’ Callaghan is currently being held without bond and will have a bond review today.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070.
