Update: Suspect Arrested for Choice Market Robberies in Gaithersburg

For Immediate Release: Friday, March 7, 2014

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police - Major Crimes Division have arrested a suspect believed to be responsible for two armed robberies that occurred at Choice Market in Gaithersburg on January 17 and January 24.

Yesterday, Jerson Nirvio Mendez, age 38, of the 10000 block of Stedwick Road in Montgomery Village, was arrested and charged with two counts of armed robbery.

On February 7, Mendez was developed as a suspect in these robberies when a 6th District patrol officer, who had responded to the January 24 robbery, observed him walking in the Montgomery Village shopping center.  The officer recognized Mendez based on surveillance photos obtained from the Choice Market during the robberies.  In addition, Mendez was wearing the same jacket that the suspect in the robberies had been wearing.

The officer detained Mendez and contacted robbery detectives.  Detectives interviewed Mendez about the robberies, and he was released without charges.  Following the interview with Mendez, detectives obtained a search warrant for Mendez' residence.  The search warrant was served on February 27 and items of evidentiary value were obtained.  An arrest warrant was obtained on February 28 charging Mendez with the two armed robberies.

Mendez is currently being held on a $100,000 bond.
