Police Investigate Gaithersburg Deaths as a Murder-Suicide

For Immediate Release: Monday, June 16, 2014

Detectives from the Major Crimes Division are investigating two apparent shootings that occurred last night in a Gaithersburg parking garage.  Investigators believe that the shootings are a domestic-related homicide and suicide.

On Sunday, June 15 at approximately 11:20 p.m., officers working in the area of Girard Street and Allied Place heard gunshots.  Officers entered the parking garage in the 500 block of Raven Avenue and discovered a 38-year-old Gaithersburg man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Fire/Rescue personnel transported the man to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

While officers and Fire/Rescue units rendered aid to the man in the parking garage, other officers made contact with a 39-year-old Gaithersburg woman who appeared to be hiding between parked cars in the same parking garage. The woman, who was armed with a handgun, shot herself. She was also transported by Fire/Rescue to a hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the woman may have shot the male victim and then shot herself.  Police believe that the man and woman were married but may have been separated.  The identities of the victims will be released after family has been notified.

Detectives continue to investigate these two deaths and are asking anyone with information relating to this event or the two victims to call the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070.  Callers may remain anonymous.
