Detectives from the Montgomery County Police - Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged a suspect for the robbery of four Montgomery County banks. Jose Mercedes, age 45, of the 8400 block of Melissa Street in Hyattsville, was arrested on the evening of June 23 and charged with four counts of armed robbery.

On June 23, at approximately 4:39 p.m., 2nd District officers responded to the M&T Bank located at 10420 Montgomery Avenue in Kensington for a report of a bank robbery.

Investigation revealed that the male suspect, later identified as Mercedes, entered the bank and passed a note to the teller. The note demanded money and implied that the suspect had a weapon. The suspect received cash and exited the bank.

A short time later, with the assistance of K9 officers, the suspect was located hiding in a shed in a backyard in the 3200 block of McComas Avenue in Kensington. The money bag and other items of evidentiary value were also located nearby. Police located the proceeds from the bank in the suspect’s pockets.

During questioning, Mercedes admitted to committing the bank robbery at the Montgomery Avenue M&T bank in addition to three other bank robberies:

  • M&T bank located at 10100 River Road in Potomac on December 21, 2013
  • M&T bank located at 7920 Norfolk Avenue in Bethesda on December 26, 2013
  • Wells Fargo bank located at 9812 Falls Road in Potomac on March 1, 2014
