MCP Officer Struck By Vehicle on Beltway; Driver Arrested and Charged with DUI

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, July 2, 2014

Yesterday at approximately 3:50 p.m., Montgomery County police officers were called to assist Maryland State Troopers with a multi-vehicle collision on the outerloop of Interstate 495 between the Connecticut Avenue and Georgia Avenue exits.  Montgomery County officers responded to the scene and began to help the Troopers.  As a Montgomery County police officer was directing traffic at the collision, a Hyundai veered out of the channeled lane and into a lane closed off to vehicles, striking the officer.  There was a confrontation between the officer and the driver.  Fire & Rescue personnel led the officer to an ambulance for treatment.  The officer was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.

The driver of the vehicle, who is identified as Reginald Eugene Taylor, age 58, of the 2200 block of E Biddle Street in Baltimore, was arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.  Taylor was also issued a traffic citation for failure to control speed to avoid a collision.  Taylor provided a breath sample upon arrest that indicated a breath alcohol concentration (BAC) of (.22).  Taylor was released after processing at a district station.

The officer is being identified as Francis McDonough, a 20-year-veteran of the department.  The Department is reviewing the circumstances of this incident.

Note: There is no mugshot available of Taylor.
