Update: Collision on Columbia Pike Now Fatal

For Immediate Release: Thursday, July 10, 2014

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit continue to investigate a now fatal collision that occurred yesterday on Columbia Pike.  The Collision Reconstruction Unit is classifying this as a hit-and-run collision.

Yesterday at approximately 1:18 p.m., 3rd District officers and Fire/Rescue personnel responded to a personal injury collision on Columbia Pike near the intersection with Fairland Road.

Upon arrival, officers observed a black Audi overturned on eastbound Fairland Road, a black Lincoln Navigator on northbound Columbia Pike, and a Toyota Scion tC on eastbound Fairland Road which appeared to be involved in the collision. By speaking with witnesses, officers determined that a red Jeep was also involved in the sequence of events leading to the collision and a look-out was placed for that vehicle. The Jeep Commander returned to the scene of the collision at approximately 3:24 p.m., and the driver stated that she had been involved in the earlier collision.

Preliminary investigation has determined that the Jeep Commander was traveling northbound on Columbia Pike and made a lane change.  During the lane change, the Jeep came into contact with the Audi which was also traveling on northbound Columbia Pike.  The collision between the Jeep and the Audi caused the Audi to collide with the Lincoln Navigator also traveling on northbound Columbia Pike.  As a result of the collision with the Lincoln Navigator, the Audi overturned and struck a Toyota Scion tC which was stopped at the intersection on westbound Fairland Road at Columbia Pike.

The driver of the Audi was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.  The driver of the Lincoln Navigator was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The other drivers involved in the collision did not sustain any injuries. The driver of the Audi has been identified as Marcelina Maria Cordoba, age 22, of the 14100 block of Castle Boulevard in Silver Spring.  The driver of the Lincoln Navigator has been identified as Joselyn Nicole Gamble, age 29, of the 3100 block of Quartet Lane in Silver Spring.  The driver of the Jeep Commander has been identified as Phyllis Nicole Ford, age 37, of the 4800 block of Reisterstown Road in Baltimore.  The driver of the Toyota Scion tC has been identified as Rhonda Munir Eltobgi, age 20, of the 2800 block of Mozart Drive in Silver Spring.

The circumstances surrounding this collision remain under investigation.  Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240.773.6620 or call the police non-emergency number at 301.279.8000.  Callers may remain anonymous.
