Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting at Bank in Silver Spring

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, July 22, 2014

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred today inside the Capital One Bank located at 8740 Arliss Street in Silver Spring.

Third District officers responded to a trespassing call at the bank at 11:54 this morning. Officers encountered an adult male inside the bank behaving erratically. The suspect failed to respond to officers' instructions, displayed a knife and threatened the safety of the officers. The suspect was shot by a Montgomery County Police Officer.

At this stage of the investigation it was determined that the suspect was struck in his torso. He was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to the injuries that he received from the shooting. During the investigation two knives were recovered at the scene.

The suspect has been identified as Donovan Bayton, age 54, from Silver Spring.

As is standard procedure, the two involved 3rd District officers have been placed on paid administrative leave during the course of the investigation. Their identities are expected be released tomorrow.

The investigation surrounding the circumstances of this incident is continuing.
