UPDATE: Driver Involved in Fatal Bicycle Collision Charged

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police-Collision Reconstruction Unit have concluded their investigation of the fatal collision involving a bicyclist and a motor vehicle that occurred on November 24, 2014.

On February 5, based upon that investigation, the driver of the Ford truck, identified as John Kline of Hagerstown, was charged with:



  1. Failure to yield to oncoming traffic on a left turn
  2. Negligent driving.


It was on November 24, 2014, at approximately 9:45 a.m., that officers and Fire/Rescue personnel responded to the 12100 block of Darnestown Road for a bicyclist struck by a vehicle.

A Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) vehicle, a Ford F550 truck, was stopped at the entrance to the shopping center and an adult male was unconscious in the roadway near a bicycle.  Responding officers immediately started life-saving measures and were then assisted by Montgomery County Fire/Rescue personnel who continued those efforts.  Despite these actions, the bicyclist succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the collision.  He was wearing a bicycle helmet.

The driver of the truck has been identified as John Phillip Kline, age 52, of the 12300 block of Wild Cherry Lane in Hagerstown.

The bicyclist has been identified as Andrew Gerard Malizio, age 60, of the 300 block of Hart Road in Gaithersburg.
