Montgomery County police detectives have arrested Melvin Calix, age 21, of the 11400 block of Monterrey Drive in Silver Spring, for committing four burglaries and an assault that he committed during one of those burglaries.

Since January, Montgomery County Police detectives have been investigating a series of residential burglaries in the Wheaton area of the county. These burglaries have occurred during the nighttime hours and entry into the homes has been through unlocked doors or windows.  Residents were home and sleeping at the time of these burglaries.

The four burglaries committed by Calix are as follows:

  • Overnight hours of January 18 to January 19 – 11500 block of Grandview Avenue in Silver Spring. Several items were taken from the residence.
  • January 19 at approximately 4:30 a.m. – 2900 block of Dawson Avenue in Silver Spring. The victim awoke to the sound of footsteps and observed the suspect in the kitchen. The suspect fled from the home with property.
  • February 1 at approximately 2:34 a.m. – 11900 block of Coronada Place in Silver Spring. The suspect entered one of the bedrooms and assaulted one of the residents.
  • February 12 at approximately 12:10 a.m. – 11300 block of College View Drive in Silver Spring. The suspect fled from the home when he was interrupted by a homeowner who was returning to the residence.
Based on evidence and leads developed during the investigation, detectives began to focus on Calix as a suspect. On February 18, detectives arrested Calix on the strength of an arrest warrant and executed a search warrant at his residence. In the home, investigators located items stolen from the burglarized homes. During police questioning, Calix made statements implicating himself in these crimes.

Calix was transported to the Central Processing Unit and was charged with numerous crimes to include burglary, theft, and assault.
