Update: Suspect Arrested for Homicide of 95-Year-Old Colesville Man

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, February 25, 2015

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department-Major Crimes Division have arrested Eric S. Dyson, age 60, of the 500 block of Randolph Road in Silver Spring, for the homicide of 95-year-old Dan Belvin.

On Monday, February 23, at approximately 12:30 p.m., police were called to an apartment in the 500 block of Randolph Road after a concerned friend related to the building property manager that they had not heard from the victim. The building property manager checked the apartment, found the resident deceased, and called 9-1-1.

Responding 4th District Patrol officers found the circumstances to be suspicious and Major Crimes detectives were called to investigate the death. It appeared that Belvin had suffered multiple sharp force injuries.  Based on witness accounts, Belvin was last known to be alive on Thursday, February 19.

During the investigation, Dyson, who resides in the same senior apartment community as the victim, was developed as a suspect. On February 19 at approximately 9:00 p.m., the victim's card was used at a convenience store located close to the victim's residence.  Between February 20 and February 23, one of the victim's credit cards was used at various locations.  Dyson was captured on store video surveillance using the victim's credit cards.

Detectives also determined that Dyson had been using the victim's vehicle prior to the victim's death and that the victim had requested that Dyson return his vehicle keys.

On February 24, a staff member at the senior apartment community observed Dyson driving the victim's vehicle in the parking lot.  Dyson was arrested by officers.

During questioning, Dyson alleged that he offered sexual favors for the victim in exchange for the use of the victim's vehicle and money.  He admitted to stabbing the victim in response to alleged unwelcome sexual advances.

Dyson was transported to the Central Processing Unit and charged with first-degree murder, credit card theft and applicable fraud charges, and auto theft. He is scheduled for bond review tomorrow in District Court.
