Update: Arrest Made in Silver Spring Homicide

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, March 18, 2015

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police-Major Crimes Division have been investigating the Monday, March 16 shooting and homicide of Jonathan Lopez in Silver Spring.  Last night, March 17, law enforcement officers arrested Erick Ramirez, 24 years old, of the 8300 block of Piney Branch Road, for the murder of Jonathan Lopez.

On Monday, March 16 at approximately 8:25 p.m., 3rd District officers and fire/rescue personnel responded for the report of a shooting near Piney Branch Road and Dale Drive.  First responders located Jonathan Lopez, who was conscious but who had collapsed on the sidewalk, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.  He was transported to a trauma center in Washington, D.C. for treatment but succumbed to his wounds in the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 17.  Jonathan Lopez resided in the 3800 block of 39th Street in Brentwood, Maryland.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in the District of Columbia ruled Lopez' death a homicide caused by the gunshot wound.

Investigation by homicide detectives revealed that Lopez was in a relationship with a woman who had a child fathered by Ramirez.  On the evening of March 16, the woman and Lopez went to pick up the child from Ramirez at his Piney Branch residence; Lopez waited outside in the vehicle.  While the woman was inside the home, Lopez and Ramirez exchanged text messages.  After the woman and Lopez had picked up the child and had left the immediate area in a vehicle, the two men continued to text one another for a short time.  Shortly after Lopez received one of these text messages from Ramirez, Lopez returned to the area where Ramirez lived.  Ramirez confronted Lopez. shot him, and fled on foot.  After being shot, Lopez ran a short distance before collapsing on the sidewalk.

Detectives obtained a warrant for Erick Ramirez charging him with first degree murder and law enforcement officers arrested him last night in the 4400 block of Connecticut Avenue, NW in Washington, D.C.  Ramirez remains in custody in Washington, D.C. awaiting extradition.  The timeframe for the extradition process is not known.  At the time the process is completed, Ramirez will be transported to Montgomery County for arraignment and bond review.
