Police Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Collision

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Collision Reconstruction Unit continue to investigate a fatal collision that occurred this morning in Wheaton.

At approximately 6:34 a.m., officers and Fire & Rescue personnel responded to the intersection of University Boulevard and Arcola Avenue for a pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle. The 81-year-old pedestrian was transported to Suburban Hospital with what were believed to be serious but non-life-threatening injuries. While in the hospital, the pedestrian’s condition deteriorated and he succumbed to his injures at approximately 9:25 a.m.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the pedestrian was attempting to cross University Boulevard West in a southerly direction when he was struck by a 2004 Ford F250.  Whether or not the pedestrian was in a crosswalk remains under investigation.

The pedestrian is being identified as Ernest Malvin Rounds of the 1100 block of University Boulevard West in Silver Spring.

The driver of the vehicle is being identified as Hector Cortes-Nestor, age 44, of the 1500 block of Wheaton Lane in Silver Spring. There was also a passenger in the vehicle.
