Detectives Charge Man With Two Bank Robberies

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division – Robbery Section have charged Tony Linn Smith, age 55, of an unconfirmed address, with two bank robberies. One occurred at a SunTrust Bank on July 23 and the other at an M&T Bank on July 25.

On July 23, at approximately 9:25 a.m., 3rd District officers responded for the report of an armed robbery at the SunTrust Bank located at 8700 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring. The investigation revealed that Smith entered the bank, approached a teller and passed a note demanding money and implying he had a gun. The suspect received an undisclosed amount of cash and fled from the bank.

On July 25, at approximately 10:55 a.m., 1st District officers responded for the report of an armed robbery at the M&T Bank located at 51 West Edmonston Drive in Rockville. The investigation revealed that Smith entered the bank, approached a teller and passed a note demanding money and implying he had a gun. The suspect received an undisclosed amount of cash and fled from the bank.

Robbery detectives disseminated a bank surveillance photograph of the suspect to officers. An officer contacted detectives and identified the suspect as Smith. On July 27, detectives located Smith in Silver Spring and arrested him.

Smith has been charged with two counts of armed robbery and two counts of theft from $1000 to under $10,000. He is currently being held without bond.
