Fatal Pedestrian Collision in Gaithersburg Investigated

For Immediate Release: Monday, September 7, 2015

Detectives from the Collision Reconstruction Unit are currently investigating an early morning fatal collision involving a pedestrian.

At approximately 5:55 a.m., 6th District officers, Gaithersburg City Police officers, and Fire/Rescue personnel responded to the area of S. Frederick Avenue and S. Westland Drive for the report of a pedestrian struck.  First responders located an adult female pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle at the intersection.  She succumbed to her injuries at the scene.  She is being identified as Muivembet Gelaw, 50 years old, of the 500 block of Skidmore Boulevard in Gaithersburg.

Investigation determined that Gelaw was walking westbound across S. Frederick Avenue at S. Westland Drive in the area of the crosswalk.  A silver, 2002 Toyota Camry was traveling southbound on S. Frederick Avenue and struck Gelaw.  That intersection is marked with crosswalks and is controlled by traffic and pedestrian signals.  Investigators are working to determine what the traffic control devices were indicating at the time of the collision.

The driver is being identified as Rodolfo S. Guillen, 42 years old, of the 400 block of N. Summit Avenue in Gaithersburg.  He remained on the scene and was not injured.

This collision remains under investigation. Detectives are asking anyone with information regarding this collision to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620. Callers may remain anonymous.
