Person with Knife Taken Into Custody for Medical Evaluation

For Immediate Release: Monday, September 7, 2015

Yesterday at approximately 11:32 a.m., officers were dispatched to an apartment in the 13800 block of Castle Boulevard in Silver Spring for a domestic disturbance.

Officers arrived at the apartment and spoke with the complainant. She stated that her family member, a 30-year-old male who lived with her, had removed a large knife from the kitchen and had walked around the apartment with it. She explained that at one point, the male exited the apartment and threatened a passerby with the knife. (Police were unable to locate this person and his/her identity is not known). The complainant asked the family member to give her the knife and he complied; he then exited the apartment.   The complainant told officers that the family member had been drinking alcohol that day and she was concerned that he may have mental health issues. She stated that the family member had not threatened her but had left the apartment acting as if he wanted to fight someone. She last saw him walking toward the back of the apartment building.  She then called 9-1-1.

As the two initial responding officers attempted to locate the subject, a resident alerted officers to the subject’s location at the side of the apartment building. Upon seeing the two officers, the subject began walking to the rear of the apartment building and stated to the officers, “Back off!” Officers could see that the subject was carrying a kitchen knife in his right hand and had a bottle of alcohol tucked in the waist of his shorts. The subject stated to officers, “If you’re going to shoot me, just shoot me.” The two officers requested the assistance of additional officers, to include an officer with a Taser, while attempting to keep the subject engaged in dialogue. During this time, the subject drank from the alcoholic bottle. As additional officers responded to assist, an arriving officer deployed his Taser. Officers were then able to remove the knife from the subject and take him into custody.

The subject was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation. Officers would like to speak with the passerby who came into contact with the subject outside of the apartment and is asking that this person call the 3rd District Investigative Section at 240-773-6870.  Additionally, anyone with information about this incident is also asked to call 3rd District detectives at 240-773-6870.
