Suspect Arrested for Firearm Offenses After Search Reveals Concealed Handgun

For Immediate Release: Monday, October 26, 2015

Officers from the Montgomery County Police Department - 4th District Central Business District Unit have arrested Jefferson D. Delgado, age 22, of Monterrey Drive in Silver Spring, for possession of a handgun and discharge of a firearm in an urban area.

Yesterday at approximately 5:54 p.m., 9-1-1 received a call for shots fired in the area of Connecticut Avenue and Veirs Mill Road in Wheaton.  The 9-1-1 caller stated that he had heard a shot and then observed a Hispanic male with a gun at a bus stop on the north side of Veirs Mill Road near Connecticut Avenue.  The complainant also provided a detailed clothing description.

The first arriving officer to the area stopped at the bus stop on the north side of Veirs Mill Road at Connecticut Avenue.  The officer asked a man waiting at the bus stop if he had heard any sound of shots or saw a person with a gun; the man replied that he had not.  During this conversation, a Metro bus stopped to pick up the passenger.

The officer boarded the bus to investigate whether passengers had heard or seen anything suspicious and to see if the suspect was on the bus.  The officer noted that a person matching the suspect's description was sitting in the last row.  Additional officers responded to the bus and instructed the suspect to exit.

The suspect was identified as Delgado.  During a surface search of the outside of Delgado's clothing for weapons, the searching officer determined that Delgado was concealing a gun on his lower leg.  Officers retrieved a loaded, .22 caliber semi-automatic handgun from Delgado's ankle and retrieved three bullets from his pockets.

Investigation revealed that Delgado had entered the bus at a bus stop on Viers Mill Road in the vicinity of Newport Mill Road.  A search of that area revealed two spent .22 caliber shell casings.

Delgado was transported to the Central Processing Unit and was charged with possession of a handgun, concealing a dangerous weapon, and discharging a firearm in an urban area.  At bond review today, his bond was set at $10,000, unsecured.

Further investigation by the Special Victims Investigations Division has indicated that this incident is related to an earlier, unreported domestic incident that involved Delgado and occurred in the area of Veirs Mill and Newport Mill Roads.  During the domestic event, Delgado is reported to have discharged the gun - no one was shot.
