For Immediate Release: Wednesday, May 4, 2016

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department - Major Crimes Division have charged Gregory Goodwin, age 46, of Washington, D.C., with the attempted armed robbery of the Express Check Cash located in Wheaton.

On April 20 at 1:15 p.m., 4th District officers responded to the Express Check Cash located at 2301 University Boulevard West in Wheaton for the report of an attempted armed robbery that had just occurred.

Investigators determined that Goodwin entered the Express Check Cash located at 2301 University Boulevard West and approached the counter.  He held up a note that demanded money and then placed the note in his pants pocket.  He then removed a handgun from the waistband of his pants and pointed the gun at the two employees.  Goodwin then fled from the store without obtaining money and drove off in a vehicle.  An employee was able to provide police with the vehicle's license plate number.  Officers then entered the vehicle into a national police database as having been involved in an attempted armed robbery.

On May 2 at approximately 3:50 a.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department stopped the involved vehicle in the 1400 block of Oglethorpe Street NW in Washington, D.C.  The driver was identified as Goodwin.  Goodwin was arrested by the Metropolitan Police Department on unrelated, vehicle registration violations and made admissions to his involvement in the attempted armed robbery.  Investigators from the Montgomery County Police Department applied for and were granted a warrant for Goodwin's arrest for attempted armed robbery.  Goodwin is currently in the custody of DC Department of Corrections and is awaiting extradition to Montgomery County.
