Update: Suspect Arrested for Bank Robbery and Carjacking

For Immediate Release: Monday, May 16, 2016

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department - Major Crimes Division have charged Jhasir Marquis Devaux, age 18, of an unconfirmed address, with the April 9 robbery of the Sandy Spring Bank located at 14241 Layhill Road and the April 27 carjacking of a vehicle on Alderton Lane in the Layhill area.

On April 9 at approximately 10:45 a.m., 4th District officers responded to the Sandy Spring Bank located on 14241 Layhill Road for a report of a bank robbery. Investigation revealed that the suspect, now identified as Devaux, entered the bank, passed a note that demanded money, and implied that he had a weapon. Devuax obtained an undisclosed amount of cash and fled from the bank.

On April 27 at approximately 4:11 p.m., 4th District officers responded to the 1300 block of Alderton Lane for the report of a carjacking.  The victim stated that she had just returned home from running errands and parked her vehicle in her driveway.  The suspect, later identified as Devaux, approached her open, driver's side door and ordered her out of the vehicle.  Devaux then grabbed the victim's arm, pulled her out of the car, and drove off.

Major Crimes investigators continued to work on these two cases.  On May 2, a 4th District officer was driving on routine patrol and at approximately 1:10 p.m., observed a disabled vehicle with Texas plates on Georgia Avenue at Niles Street.  The officer stopped and spoke with the driver, who was outside of the car.  The driver, later identified as Devaux, stated that the vehicle was his and had run out of gas.  When the officer asked Devaux  for his license, he ran off.  Devaux was located by officers a short distance away and was taken into custody.  Officers determined that the vehicle had been carjacked on April 27 on Alderton Lane and that Devaux had replaced the vehicle's Maryland plates with Texas plates.  When questioned, Devaux stated that he had stolen the vehicle.  He was charged with carjacking and transported to the Central Processing Unit.

Upon Devaux's arrest for the carjacking, a search warrant was conducted at a residence where Devaux had been staying.  During the search, investigators found evidence linking him to the April 9 robbery of the Sandy Spring Bank.  Devaux was then charged with robbery.

Devaux remains in the custody of the Department of Corrections and is being held on a $25,000 bond for the carjacking case and a $100,000 bond for the bank robbery.
