Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Firearms Investigative Unit have arrested and charged Jonathan Hemming, age 52, of the 100 block of Spring Street in Gaithersburg, with attempted murder, firearm-related offenses, and drug offenses, after he attempted to shoot officers with a homemade handgun.

On May 18, detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Repeat Offender Unit began surveillance on Hemming as he was wanted on drug-related charges.  At approximately 3:30 p.m., detectives observed Hemming enter a vehicle at an address in Gaithersburg.  Detectives approached the vehicle and told Hemming he was under arrest.  Hemming resisted the arrest, became combative with the officers, and reached in the center compartment area of the vehicle and grabbed a homemade handgun.  A Taser was deployed on Hemming after he pointed the gun at detectives.
