For Immediate Release: Tuesday, October 4, 2016

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Major Crimes Division have charged Anthony Eugene Shade, age 41, of the 1100 block of Owens Road in Oxon Hill, with a carjacking that occurred yesterday evening in Wheaton.

On Monday, October 3 at approximately 9:00 p.m., 4th District officers responded to the W Express gas station located at 2204 University Boulevard West for the report of an armed carjacking.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the adult female victim was fueling her vehicle at the W Express gas station when the suspect, later identified as Shade, approached her at the gas pump.  Shade gestured that he had a weapon in his pocket and verbally threatened that he would harm the victim if she did not give him her vehicle.  The victim complied with Shade’s demands and gave him the car keys.  Shade fled from the gas station in the victim’s 2011 black Toyota RAV4.  The victim went inside the gas station and called 9-1-1.  She was not injured during the carjacking.

A lookout for the carjacked vehicle was immediately broadcast to MCP officers.  At approximately 9:16 p.m., a Montgomery County police officer located the carjacked vehicle traveling southbound on New Hampshire Avenue at University Boulevard East in Langley Park.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver refused to stop.  MCP officers pursued Shade as he fled in the carjacked vehicle into Arlington County, Virginia.  Officers were in pursuit of Shade when he collided with a vehicle in the intersection of Lee Highway and North Highland Street in Arlington.

At the collision scene, Shade was arrested by Arlington County police officers and transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries that he sustained in the collision.  Shade was later released from the hospital and transported to the Arlington County Detention Center where he was charged with offenses that occurred in Arlington County, Virginia.

Montgomery County police investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Shade charging him with the carjacking that occurred in Montgomery County.  Shade is currently incarcerated in Arlington County, Virginia, and is awaiting an extradition hearing. Shade will be served with the Montgomery County arrest warrant upon his return to Maryland.
