Detectives Investigate Olney Assault as Hate-Based Incident

For Immediate Release: Saturday, October 22, 2016

Detectives from the 4th District are investigating an assault that occurred at an Olney restaurant early this morning as a hate-based incident.

At approximately 2:50 a.m., officers responded to The Greene Turtle bar and restaurant located at 18101 Town Center Drive for the report of an assault in progress.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that a group of four people were at the bar through the later hours of the evening.  During that time, another larger group of people were sitting toward the other end of the bar.

At closing time, members of the larger group began to leave the establishment.  As the larger group exited, an adult male from that group took a glass of water, approached the other group of four people, and poured water on two of the males. Witnesses reported that the male referred to them in a derogatory manner in regard to sexual orientation and began challenging them to a fight.

Both groups exited the restaurant and individuals from both groups became involved in an altercation in the parking lot.

Fire and Rescue responded to the location and transported two males to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the altercation.

Detectives believe that they have identified the adult male suspect who poured water on the two victims and they continue to work to identify all those involved in this incident.  This remains an ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the 4th District Investigative Section at 240-773-5530.   Callers may remain anonymous.
