Detectives Investigate Home Invasion Robbery and Kidnapping in Olney; One Suspect Arrested

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, January 24, 2017

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Major Crimes Division have charged Kofi Essuman Kwagyan, age 24, of the 3800 block of Kenilworth Avenue in Bladensburg, with committing a home invasion robbery in Olney after he was arrested by officers from the 4th District.

On Monday, January 23 at approximately 7:49 p.m., 4th District officers responded to residences in the 18100 block of Marksman Circle and the 18700 block of Bloomfield Road in Olney for the report of a home invasion robbery that detectives have determined began inside of an address on Marksman Circle.

The investigation by detectives determined that three adult males and an adult female were outside of the home at the Marksman Circle address when they were approached by two male suspects wearing ski masks, one of whom was armed with a handgun.  The suspects forced the victims back inside of the home.  A short time later, two additional adult male victims arrived at the Marksman Circle home and were confronted by the suspects and also forced inside the home.

The suspects obtained cash from the resident who lived at the Marksman Circle home.  One of the suspects ordered two of the male victims to accompany him in the car of one of the victims to the Bloomfield Road address in order to obtain more money.  While traveling in the car, one of the victims sent a text message to a resident inside of the Bloomfield Road address stating that he was being robbed and to call the police.  After receiving the text message, that resident called the police and reported the robbery.  After arriving at the Bloomfield Road residence, the suspect observed officers responding to the call for the robbery and fled on foot from the area.

Officers investigated and then responded to the Marksman Circle address where they learned from the remaining victims that the suspect who had been holding them at gunpoint had fled from the home shortly before the police arrived.

At approximately 8:40 p.m., officers patrolling the area for the suspects observed an individual that matched the suspect description boarding a Metrobus on Olney Sandy Spring Road near Hillcrest Drive.  Officers stopped the bus and identified this suspect as Kofi Essuman Kwagyan.  Officers discovered evidence from the home invasion robbery in Kwagyan’s possession.

Kwagyan was arrested and transported to the Central Processing Unit (CPU) where was charged with home invasion, armed robbery, kidnapping, assault charges, and other related offenses.  Kwagyan is being held without bond.

Detectives continue to investigate this home invasion robbery and have reason to believe that this robbery was not a random event.  Investigators are actively working to identify the suspect who fled from the Marksman Circle address.

Anyone who has information about the unidentified suspect or this home invasion robbery is asked to call the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070.  Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).  Crime Solvers will pay a cash reward of up to $10,000 for information provided to them that leads to an arrest for this crime.
