Empty Canoe Found on Potomac River; Police Seek Help in Locating Owner

Update: February 10 at 6:45 p.m.:  Officers from the Managed Search Operations Team were contacted by the owner of the canoe who reported that everyone is safe an accounted for. 

The Montgomery County Police Department – Managed Search Operations Team is requesting the public’s assistance in identifying the owner of a canoe that was found this morning partially submerged on the Potomac River near Swain’s Lock.

Today, (February 10), at approximately 9:30 a.m., Montgomery County Police officers responded to the Potomac River near Swain’s Lock (which is located on Swain’s Lock Road in the Potomac area) for the report of a partially submerged canoe in the water.  Responding officers located the unoccupied canoe in the river.  MCP officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel searched the river and did not locate anyone.

MCP is attempting to determine if the operator of this canoe is missing or simply lost the canoe on the river.  Anyone who recognizes this canoe or knows the whereabouts of the owner or operator is asked to contact the Montgomery County Police Managed Search Operations Team at 240-370-9246 or the police non-emergency number at 301-279-8000.
