Yesterday (Saturday, February 18) at approximately 6:30 p.m., 4th District officers were dispatched to the report of a collision in the area of New Hampshire Avenue and Spencerville Road in the Colesville area. Officer Matthew Runkles, the first officer to arrive in the area, located the collision on Norbeck Road (Route 28) at Llewellyn Manor Way.

Officer Runkles observed that one of the vehicles that had been involved in the collision was disabled in the roadway and activated his patrol car's emergency lights. He stopped his marked patrol cruiser behind the vehicle. The officer unbuckled his seat belt and was about to exit his cruiser when a 1995 Mercedes-Benz S500 traveling west on Norbeck Road rear-ended the MCP cruiser. The Mercedes-Benz then swerved around the cruiser and came to a stop. Officer Runkles, a ten-year veteran of the Police Department, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.

The driver of the striking vehicle was identified as Morris Moody, age of 65, of Deer Valley Terrace in Silver Spring. He was arrested and charged by MCP officers for driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol (DUI) and additional traffic offenses. Moody consented to a breath test which indicated a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of (.17). The legal BAC limit is (.08) in Maryland.

MCP continues to urge those who choose to drink alcohol to make the right decision and choose a sober driver for your ride home.
