Man Charged with Burglary and Theft from Sears of Jewelry Valued at over $800,000

Montgomery County Police – 3^rd District officers have arrested Daniel E. Grant, age 34, of the 3400 block of Robey Terrace in Silver Spring, for commercial burglary and theft offenses.  Grant remained inside the White Oak Sears department store after the store had closed and stole approximately $830,000 worth of jewelry from the store before he was apprehended by police.

On Friday, March 17 at approximately 11:32 p.m., 3^rd District officers were dispatched to the Sears department store located in the White Oak Shopping Center at 11255 New Hampshire Avenue for the report of a commercial burglary alarm.

It was developed through the course of the investigation that after the store had closed at 11:15 p.m., and the store’s alarm system was activated, the alarm alerted to motion activity in several locations within the store.  3^rd District officers and K9 officers entered the Sears and observed a suspect with his face concealed and wearing all dark clothing and gloves fleeing from the area of the jewelry department.  This suspect, later identified as Grant, fled out of a front entrance of the Sears and was immediately arrested by officers who were positioned outside of the store.

Detectives determined that Grant had remained in the Sears after the store had closed for the evening.  Once the store closed, Grant proceeded to the jewelry department where he used a hammer he obtained from inside the Sears to break out the glass from multiple jewelry display cases.  After he broke into the display cases, Grant stole approximately $830,000 worth of jewelry and put the jewelry into a backpack purse that he had obtained from the Sears.  Grant’s theft was interrupted by the officers who had entered the Sears to investigate the motion alarms.  As Grant was fleeing from the responding officers, he left the hammer and the Sears shopping bag that contained the stolen jewelry in the jewelry department area.

Grant was transported to the Central Processing Unit (CPU) where he was charged with two counts of commercial burglary and one count of theft.  Grant was ordered to be held without bond.
