Two Suspects Charged with Attempted Second-Degree Murder in Forest Glen Area Shooting

For Immediate Release: Friday, April 28, 2017

Montgomery County Police Department officers have charged Edward Jones, age 28, of Oxon Hill, and Jeremy Smith, age 25, of Upper Marlboro, with attempted second-degree murder and additional offenses associated with a shooting that occurred in the Forest Glen area on Wednesday afternoon.  Detectives do not believe this was a random incident.

On April 26 at approximately 4:19 p.m., 3rd District officers were dispatched to the sound of shots fired in the area of Woodland Drive and Myrtle Road in Forest Glen.  The caller observed three vehicles, to include a gold Cadillac SUV, traveling at a high rate of speed through the neighborhood. Minutes later, officers were dispatched to the sound of shots fired and cars driving away in the area of Belvedere Boulevard.  Officers located three shell casings on Belvedere Boulevard.

Around the time of these calls, an officer who was in a marked cruiser and stopped at a red light on southbound Colesville Road at Dale Drive, observed two vehicles traveling southbound on Colesville Road in the northbound lanes against traffic.  The officer initiated a traffic stop on the two vehicles. Occupants of the two vehicles exited the cars and stated that the driver of one of the cars had just been shot at by a suspect in a Cadillac Escalade.  (No one was struck by any of the bullets).  The officer observed multiple bullet holes in the driver's area of one of the vehicles.  The occupants were able to provide a description of the shooter.

Residents in the area were able to confirm the suspect vehicle (an Escalade) and the shooter's physical description (to include his carrying of a back pack).  One resident was able to provide a partial tag for the Escalade.

An officer circulating the area located the gold Escalade and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle in the 8800 block of Colesville Road.  Two occupants, to include the driver who was identified as Smith, were detained by officers.

A resident in the 700 block of Dale Drive flagged down an officer who was driving in the area and stated that he had observed a male running through yards.  Officers located the subject, identified as Jones, hiding to the rear of a home on Dale Drive.  Jones' book bag was located discarded in the area.  Officers located an amount of marijuana indicative of distribution, a handgun, a digital scale, plastic bags, and an empty gun magazine in the book bag.

Jones and Smith were transported to the Central Processing Unit.  Jones was charged with attempted second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, first-degree assault, conspiracy to commit first-degree assault, firearm-related charges, and drug-related charges.  Smith was charged with attempted second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and conspiracy to commit first-degree assault.
