Update: Gaithersburg Lake Drowning Victim Identified; Death Ruled as Accidental

For Immediate Release: Thursday, June 29, 2017

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division have been investigating a drowning that occurred on June 17 in Maple Lake.

The victim is identified as Kodjo Jean-Claude Ayewou, age 14, of Summit Avenue in Gaithersburg.  An autopsy that was completed in Baltimore by the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the cause and manner of death to be an accidental drowning.

On June 17 at approximately 5:08 p.m., 6th District officers responded to Maple Lake (near Washington Grove Lane) in Gaithersburg, after a groundskeeper located personal belongings near the lake.

The Department requested the assistance of Montgomery County Fire and Rescue to search the pond.  Howard County Fire and Rescue, the Montgomery County Police Managed Search Operations Team, and Gaithersburg City Police officers assisted with this search.  Rescue personnel found and recovered Ayewou's body in the water.  He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
