Burtonsville Shooting Investigated

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, August 22, 2017

Detectives with the Montgomery County Police Department - 3rd District Investigative Section are investigating a shooting that occurred yesterday afternoon in Burtonsville.

On Monday, August 21 at approximately 2:53 p.m., the Emergency Communications Center (911) received a call for the report of an assault occurring inside of a vehicle located at the intersection of Cedar Tree Drive and Red Maple Court.  Third District officers responded to that location and determined that the vehicle was no longer in the area.  Officers did, however, observe evidence found on the scene that indicated that a possible shooting had occurred in that area.  At approximately 3:22 p.m., the Emergency Communications Center was notified by a local hospital that a male victim had been dropped off at the hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

During the investigation of the shooting, officers who were in the area of Cedar Tree Drive observed a black, 2012 Acura MDX driving toward Red Maple Court.  When the driver of the Acura, described as an African-American male wearing a grey shirt, observed the officers, he abruptly accelerated the vehicle and fled from the neighborhood.  Officers observed the license plate of the Acura as it fled and determined that the vehicle had been reported stolen on August 13 from the 14400 block of Stepping Stone Way in Burtonsville.

A short time later, officers located the stolen Acura abandoned nearby on Riding Stable Road.  At approximately 4:24 p.m., an officer in the area of Riding Stable Road observed a subject who matched the description of the driver of the stolen Acura in a wooded area behind the 6100 block of Brooklyn Bridge Road.  Officers stopped the subject, identified him as a 16-year-old male, and determined that he was the driver of the stolen Acura.  The suspect was arrested and charged as a juvenile with the theft of the Acura.  He was later released to the custody of his parents.  Detectives have determined that this juvenile and the stolen Acura are not related to the shooting investigation.

This shooting remains an open investigation.  Detectives continue to interview witnesses and canvass the neighborhood to gather information and obtain additional details.

Anyone with information regarding this shooting is urged to call the 3rd District Investigative Section at 240-773-6870.  For those who wish to remain anonymous, tipsters may call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).  Crime Solvers will pay a cash reward of up to $10,000 for information provided to them that leads to the arrest and/or indictment of this suspect.  Tipsters will remain anonymous.
