Detectives from the Montgomery County Police, Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred on Wednesday, September 6 in Wheaton.
On Wednesday, September 6 at approximately 9:43 p.m., 4th District officers along with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel responded to Veirs Mill Road at Norris Drive for the report of a collision involving a motor scooter and a Montgomery County Police vehicle.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that a 74-year-old male was operating a Sunra Motor Scooter southbound on Monterrey Drive at Veirs Mill Road and attempted to cross over Veirs Mill Road. After crossing the westbound lanes of Veirs Mill Road, the scooter operator entered the eastbound lanes, when for reasons still under investigation, the motor scooter and an unmarked Montgomery County Police cruiser, east bound on Veirs MIll Road, collided in the eastbound lanes of Veirs Mill Road. The unmarked cruiser was being driven by an on duty Montgomery County Police officer.
Multiple witnesses remained on the scene and provided information to investigators.
The operator of the scooter suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Suburban Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The officer was not seriously injured.
The identities of both drivers will be released later this morning.
