Detectives Charge Juvenile Suspect with Burglaries of Open Garages and Theft of Bicycles

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, September 27, 2017

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – 5th District Patrol Investigations Unit have been investigating six burglaries of open residential garages that occurred in late August in the Clarksburg area.  The suspect in these burglaries stole bicycles.

On August 30, a Clarksburg resident notified detectives that two of his stolen bicycles were being offered for sale on the app, “OfferUp”.  Detectives identified the seller of the stolen bicycles as a 16-year-old juvenile male.  Investigators further determined that the juvenile had sold multiple bicycles on the OfferUp app beginning in early June of 2017.  Investigators contacted the buyers of the previously sold bicycles and recovered 11 bicycles.  Detectives determined that 6 of those bicycles had been reported as stolen from the garages of the following homes in Clarksburg:

  • August 20 - 23100 block of Newcut Road.
  • August 26 - 23800 block of Burdette Forest Road
  • August 26 - 11900 block of Skylark Road
  • August 26 - 23100 block of Mistflower Drive.
  • August 27 – 22700 block of Autumn Breeze Avenue
  • August 30 – 11800 block of Snowden Farm Parkway
Detectives obtained a search warrant for the juvenile’s Clarksburg area residence and recovered a GPS device that had been stolen from a vehicle in the Clarksburg area.

On September 15, detectives arrested the 16-year-old male juvenile and charged him with burglary and theft-related offenses.

Detectives believe that the five remaining bicycles were stolen between June and August 30 and that the owners have not reported the thefts to police.  Investigators are urging Clarksburg area residents who had their bicycle(s) stolen and not reported the theft(s) to police to contact them at 240-773-6261.

MCP reminds residents to lock vehicle doors and windows, and remove or hide from view items of value (to include garage door openers).  Also, it is important to secure and lock all garage access doors to the home.
