Detectives Investigate Robbery and Shooting in Silver Spring; One Suspect Arrested

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, October 25, 2017

This morning at approximately 1:36 a.m., 3rd District police officers responded to a residence in the 9300 block of New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring for the report of an armed robbery and shooting.

Officers located a 51-year-old male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his leg outside of the home and began to administer first aid.  The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigation by detectives has determined that a family had just arrived at their residence on New Hampshire Avenue from a Washington, D.C. convenience store that they own.  The 51-year-old son was driving in one vehicle and the 53-year-old daughter and 77-year-old mother were in another vehicle.  As the mother and her daughter exited their car, they were confronted by two African American male suspects, both armed with handguns.  A struggle ensued between the two suspects and the two females.  The male victim came to the aid of his mother and sister and he was pushed to the ground and shot in the leg.  The suspects stole the females’ purses (which contained cash proceeds from the business and personal property) and fled in a black Nissan Sentra.

Due to the close proximity of the robbery to Washington, D.C. and Takoma Park and the possibility that the suspects may have fled in their vehicle to those jurisdictions, the Department informed the two police departments of the suspects’ physical and vehicle descriptions.

At approximately 2:00 a.m., Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers located a black Nissan Sentra driving on New Hampshire Avenue in the area of Eastern Avenue in Washington, D.C., occupied by two individuals matching the description of the robbery suspects. MPD officers attempted to stop the vehicle.  Both suspects fled from the car.  One of the suspects was apprehended by Metropolitan Police officers.  The other suspect has not been apprehended.

The arrested suspect has been identified as Marlo Jenard Johnson, age 25, of an unconfirmed address.  He is in the custody of the Metropolitan Police Department and will be charged with three counts of armed robbery and three counts of first-degree assault by the Montgomery County Police Department via an arrest warrant.

Detectives believe that the victims were targeted by the suspects - that the suspects had knowledge that the victims own a business and that the victims may have had business proceeds in their possession at that time.
