For Immediate Release: Monday, November 6, 2017

Detectives with the Major Crimes Division continue to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred last night (Sunday) at the Stoneymill Square shopping center located in the 12200 block of Veirs Mill Road (at the corner of Veirs Mill Road and Randolph Road).

On Sunday, November 5 at approximately 8:20 p.m., the Emergency Communications Center (911) received a call for an assault in progress at the shopping center. The caller stated that he was in his vehicle and an unknown SUV was ramming his vehicle.

The first officer arriving at the scene discharged his firearm; the 52-year-old male driver of a 2003 Cadillac Escalade (SUV) was shot. Officers began life-saving measures and Fire & Rescue services were called. The driver of the Escalade was transported to a local hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

The 911 caller, a 29-year-old male who was driving a 2016 Toyota Camry, was not injured.

The officer involved in the shooting is being identified as Officer Todd Archer, an approximately ten-year-veteran of the Department.  He is currently assigned to the Patrol Division and works in the 4th District.  As is protocol, Officer Archer has been placed on paid Administrative Leave during this investigation.

The circumstances surrounding this assault call and shooting are under investigation.   Following established procedure, once Major Crimes detectives complete this investigation, their findings will be reviewed by the Howard County's State's Attorney's Office.
