Mother Charged in February Homicide of Two-Month-Old Daughter

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department- Major Crimes Division have charged Rebecca D. Briones, age 31, of the 200 block of North Adams Street in Rockville, for second-degree murder and child abuse that resulted in the February 21, 2017, death of her 2-month-old daughter, Lissana Briones.

On February 18, at approximately 8:03 p.m., Rebecca Briones called 9-1-1 to report that her daughter, Lissana, was unresponsive.  Rockville City police officers and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the home and transported Lissana to a local hospital.  Lissana was then flown to Medstar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., where she died on February 21.

On February 21, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) in Washington, D.C. conducted an autopsy on Lissana.  On September 25, the OCME ruled that Lissana’s manner of death as homicide caused by multiple blunt force injuries.

Major Crimes Detectives interviewed Briones on December 11.  Briones admitted that on February 18, she shook Lissana and threw her on to the bed.  Briones stated that she immediately called 9-1-1 after discovering Lissana unresponsive during a nap. Briones told detectives that she had abused Lissana on three prior occasions in a similar manner.

On December 12, investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Briones charging her with one count each of second-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death.

On December 13, Briones was arrested at the Montgomery County Public Safety Headquarters in Gaithersburg.

Bond information for Briones is not yet available.
