Detectives Investigate Serious Pedestrian-Involved Collision in Wheaton

For Immediate Release: Saturday, June 9, 2018

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department-Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a serious, pedestrian-involved collision that occurred early this morning in the Wheaton area.

On Saturday, June 9 at approximately 3:23 a.m., a 4th District officer was driving eastbound University Boulevard West at Amherst Avenue on routine patrol in a marked cruiser. In an adjacent lane, the officer observed a white, 2005 Toyota Camry that appeared to have an object under the vehicle. The officer and the Camry driver made eye contact, and the driver then accelerated her vehicle eastbound on University Boulevard West and drove into the parking lot of a business. The officer observed that the unknown object, which had been dragged by the vehicle and was now lying on the roadway, was a person.

Officers made contact with the driver who was identified as 25-year-old Bianca Paola Machuca of Cedar Street in Hyattsville. Machuca was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol.

The adult male pedestrian, whose identity is not being released until family is notified, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the pedestrian was walking east on the eastbound sidewalk of University Boulevard West. In the area of Amherst Avenue, the pedestrian was passing the entrance to a business’ driveway when he was struck by the Camry. The Camry’s direction of travel is still under investigation.

This collision investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.
