Bethesda Stabbing Investigated

For Immediate Release: Sunday, June 10, 2018

Detectives from the 2nd District Investigative Section have charged Jeffrey Lewis Sweeney-Grant, of the 17000 block of King James Way in Gaithersburg, for a stabbing that occurred at the Westfield Montgomery shopping mall this evening.  Sweeney-Grant and the victim are acquaintances.

On Sunday, June 10, at approximately 4:47 p.m., 2nd District officers and Fire and Rescue personnel responded for the report of a stabbing at the mall located on Democracy Boulevard.  First responders located a 37-year-old male suffering from apparent stab wounds to the area of his torso.  He was transported to a local trauma center for surgery and now appears to be in stable condition.

After the stabbing, Sweeney-Grant identified himself as the suspect to members of the mall security force.  He was taken into custody by 2nd District officers and charged with attempt first-degree murder and first-degree assault.

Preliminary investigation has indicated that Sweeney-Grant and the victim met for coffee this evening in the mall's lower level and during that time Sweeney-Grant produced a knife and stabbed the victim.  The motivation for the stabbing remains under investigation.

This remains an ongoing investigation.  Anyone with information with regard to this case is urged to contact the 2nd District Investigative Section at 240.773.6710
