Detectives with the Major Crimes Division are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred this afternoon (Monday, June 11) on Three Oaks Drive in Silver Spring.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that at approximately 2:14 p.m., a 3rd District officer, who had just cleared a call for police service in the area of the 9100 block of Sligo Creek Parkway, requested assistance while he investigated a suspicious person nearby in the 9200 block of Three Oaks Drive.

The officer encountered an African American man in that area and attempted to speak with him, but the man became combative and a physical altercation occurred.  Approximately two minutes later an officer who had arrived to assist the first officer communicated via police radio that shots had been fired and that Fire and Rescue personnel were needed.  Officers on the scene began providing first-aid to the man who was suffering from gunshot wounds.  He was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

There are several uninvolved witnesses who observed the confrontation and the shooting in the parking lot; they have been interviewed by our Major Crimes detectives.  The officer’s body-worn camera video will also be reviewed.

Following normal protocol, the male will be identified once next of kin is notified.  The identity of the officer, a two-year veteran of the Department, will be released on Tuesday morning.  He has been placed on paid Administrative Leave.  Following established procedure, once Major Crimes detectives complete this investigation, their findings will be submitted to the Howard County’s State’s Attorney’s Office for disposition.

This shooting remains under investigation.  Anyone with information regarding this shooting is asked to contact the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070.  Callers may remain anonymous.
