Update: Arrest Made in 2012 Aspen Hill Area Armed Robbery and Burglary

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division arrested Justin M. Olson, age 36, of an unconfirmed address, for the 2012 burglary of a home in the Aspen Hill area, and the armed robbery of the residents of that home.

In 2012, while processing the crime scene, detectives located a t-shirt that the suspect had discarded, and submitted that shirt for evidence processing. The suspect’s DNA was recovered as evidence and entered into a national law enforcement DNA database (The Combined DNA Index System – CODIS).

On June 15, 2018, the Montgomery County Police Crime Laboratory was notified by the Commonwealth of Virginia that the suspect’s DNA belonged to Olson.

Subsequent investigation by detectives revealed that Olson had been in Montgomery County during the time period when the burglary and armed robbery occurred.

It was on March 22, 2012, at approximately 9:35 p.m., that 4th District officers responded to a residence in the 13200 block of Georgia Avenue for the report of a robbery that had just occurred.  The investigation by detectives determined that the residents of the home also operated a commercial business in their home.  The investigation determined that the suspect knocked on the front door and that when the residents opened the door, the suspect forced his way inside the home.

The suspect, who was armed with a rifle, threatened the residents and demanded property from the business in the home.  The residents told the suspect that the property was outside of the house and the residents and suspect then walked outside of the home. The residents then told the suspect that they had to briefly return to the house. At that time they locked the suspect outside, and immediately called the police.  The suspect then fled from the area.

After the DNA match notification and further investigation, Montgomery County police detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Olson charging him with first-degree assault, armed robbery, and two counts of first-degree burglary.  Detectives arrested Olson at a residence in Virginia.  Olson waived extradition, and on June 28 he was returned to Montgomery County.  Olson was held on a $20,000 bond, with a bond review scheduled for this afternoon.
