Boyds Suicide Investigated

For Immediate Release: Thursday, July 5, 2018

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Major Crimes Division are investigating a suicide that occurred yesterday evening in Boyds.

On Wednesday, July 4 at approximately 6:00 p.m., 5th District officers and Fire and Rescue personnel responded for the report of an unresponsive inmate at the Montgomery County Department of Correction and Rehabilitation facility located at 22880 Whelan Lane.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that just before 6:00 p.m., correctional staff were conducting a routine welfare check and discovered inmate Thierry Kinshala Nkusu, 35 years old, unresponsive.  Nkusu had used a bed sheet to suspend himself in an apparent suicide attempt.  Correctional staff began life-saving efforts and summonsed Fire and Rescue personnel, however Nkusu was unable to be revived.  Additional investigation determined that Nkusu had left several handwritten suicide notes.

Nkusu's body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) in Baltimore for an autopsy.  Today the OCME ruled the cause of death a hanging and the manner of death a suicide.
